Dr Dean Allen is a best-selling author, historian, and international keynote speaker known for bringing history, sport, and conservation to life through storytelling. Originally from Somerset in the UK, Dean moved to South Africa in the 1990s, where he completed his PhD at Stellenbosch University. Over the past two decades, he has held academic and research positions in South Africa, the UK, Europe, and Australia, including roles at Stellenbosch University, the University of Johannesburg, and Bournemouth University.
Dean’s first major book, Empire, War and Cricket in South Africa: Logan of Matjiesfontein (Penguin Random House), tells the story of James Logan, the Scotsman who helped introduce cricket to South Africa. The book became a bestseller, selling more than 12,000 copies, and led to invitations to speak at prestigious venues, including the UK House of Commons, Twickenham Stadium, and events across South Africa.
His latest work, The Man Who Changed a Landscape: The Adrian Gardiner Story, explores the inspirational story of Adrian Gardiner, the founder of Shamwari Game Reserve and a pioneer of wildlife tourism and rewilding in South Africa. Through this book and keynote, Dean highlights the power of vision, resilience, and conservation to transform both landscapes and communities.
Dean has presented his talks to audiences around the world, including on international cruise ships, universities, and corporate stages. His clients value his ability to make history relevant, motivational, and entertaining. A regular face on TV and radio, he has featured on the BBC, ITV, SABC, kykNET, and the BBC World Service.
